NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — No one was hurt after two tractor-trailers crashed on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel on Thursday morning, causing one of the vehicles to catch fire.
Virginia State Police said it happened northbound on the bridge-tunnel around 11:17 a.m. Investigators said one of the tractor-trailers slowed down due to traffic congestion. A second tractor-trailer hauling lumber was unable to stop in time and crashed into the first tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer that was carrying lumber then caught fire.
That tractor-trailer was then consumed by the fire.
No one in either vehicle was hurt, but the driver of the lumber-carrying tractor-trailer, 52-year-old Marvin Tucker, was charged with following too closely.
Traffic was stopped in both directions as emergency crew
