The union representing Alberta teachers is set to discuss taking legal action against the provincial government for its use of the notwithstanding clause to force striking teachers back to work.
Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) president Jason Schilling will hold a press conference Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Edmonton.
Last week, Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party government invoked the notwithstanding clause to fast-track back-to-work legislation and end a provincewide teachers’ strike that began Oct. 6.
Smith’s use of the notwithstanding clause has drawn criticism, including by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
