The Canadian Association of Social Workers says this year’s federal budget falls short on upholding a promise made last year.
The 2024 budget, led by former prime minister Justin Trudeau and then finance minister Chrystia Freeland, laid out the intent to amend the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act and the Canada Student Loans Act.
The amendments would have included several more professions in the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program. The program currently offers to forgive the federal portion of outstanding loans for family doctors and nurses working in rural and remote communities.
The 2025 federal election came before the regulations could be passed, and Prime Minister Mark Carney has not made the same commitment.
