Ohio sent $7 million to food banks around the state as uncertainty persists over when Ohioans will receive federal food assistance.
Gov. Mike DeWine announced Oct. 30 that Ohio will spend $25 million on food banks and aid for low-income families to account for disruptions in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The move came as 1.4 million Ohioans risked losing SNAP benefits because of the government shutdown, which is now the longest in U.S. history.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture initially said November SNAP payments wouldn't go out, but two federal judges ordered the agency to pay for benefits with contingency funds. USDA told states that SNAP recipients will receive up to 65% of their benefits for the month, USA TODAY reported .
