GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- County Prosecutor David Leyton calls the four investigators on his staff a “critical piece of the puzzle” in winning convictions in criminal cases.
There’s just one problem.
Federal stimulus funds used to pay their salaries since 2021 are about to run dry.
Leyton is asking the county Board of Commissioners to keep the retired police officers working for an additional 10 months by using nearly $128,000 from the county’s general fund, as well as transferred savings from his departmental budget.
Commissioners are expected to start discussion on the positions when their Finance Committee meets on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Commissioners agreed to fund the investigators four years ago, using American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay their salaries.
