When Karen Howell is not hosting fundraising events or high teas, she is busy fending off developers from buying the humble Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) hall on the Gold Coast.
Timber-framed and painted in the iconic QCWA blue and white, the building — which sits on a 526 square metre block of land — has attracted a lot of interest from developers in recent years, thanks to its location.
It is situated on the Coolangatta foreshore, a popular tourist hotspot surrounded by pristine beaches and high-rise holiday apartments.
Ms Howell, who is president of the Coolangatta QCWA branch, said there had been offers of more than $10 million to purchase the building.
