“ Hamnet ” production designer Fiona Crombie is no stranger to the world of William Shakespeare.

Over two decades ago, she designed “Hamlet” for Australia’s Bell Shakespeare Company. “I don’t think I really engaged with the sort of rumination on death in the way that we have through this film,” she says of Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel. The film stars Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife, Agnes, as the couple grieve the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet, and how William began to write his classic tragedy “Hamlet.”
