MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - A bill aimed at strengthening the safety of rideshare users has been introduced by Alabama’s senior U.S. senator, Tommy Tuberville. His office announced the Understanding Basic English Requirements (UBER) Act on Thursday.

While the bill’s acronym plays off the name of the popular ridesharing service Uber, it would not be limited to that single company. It would require all drivers under any rideshare service to be able to read and speak English.

“America is an English-speaking country,” Tuberville said. “If you want to live and work in the United States, you need to be able to speak and read our language.”
