The trial of a sheriff’s deputy who was indicted for violating the civil rights of an inmate ended in a hung jury on Wednesday.
Jeremiah Manuyag Flores was indicted in January for the use of excessive force on a mentally ill inmate that resulted in serious injuries. The indictment also alleges that Flores did not immediately report the incident and allegedly wrote a false report to conceal his actions.
The incident occurred in August of 2024, when Flores escorted the inmate back to a holding cell at a courthouse, where he reportedly grabbed the man’s shirt and pushed him down the hall. Once in the cell, he pushed the inmate down into a bench while his hands and feet were shackled. According to the indictment, another deputy found the inmate lying in a pool of blood about two hours later.
