COVINGTON, KY. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A Covington police officer has been suspended following an internal investigation into a protest arrest on the Roebling Suspension Bridge.
Fifteen people — including two journalists — were arrested during a July demonstration against ICE. Video footage showed Officer Zachary Stayton repeatedly punching a protester who was already on the ground.
Police Chief Justin Wietholter says Stayton violated procedure and will serve a 30-day unpaid suspension. He is also required to complete remedial training before returning to duty.
The department plans to implement new de-escalation and protest response training for all officers to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public safety.
