A search for the remains of a Mount Gambier woman who went missing 37 years ago has been unsuccessful, with SA Police not ruling out a return to the rural property.

Margaret Bernie was last seen in January 1988, with police believing the 34-year-old was murdered.

Major Crime detectives, other police and State Emergency Service volunteers searched the property at Burnda Road in Compton, about 10 kilometres west of Mount Gambier yesterday , leaving about 2pm.

Major Crime Investigation Branch Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said the search for Ms Bernie's remains followed an ongoing review of the cold case and an assessment of all available evidence.
