CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The 1-cent transit tax to fund wide-reaching transportation improvements in Mecklenburg County passed by a narrow margin Tuesday night.
Local voters approved the referendum with 52.1 percent for it. The funding will be dispersed between light rail expansion (40 percent), road-related improvement (40 percent) and bus improvements (20 percent), and creates a new transit authority for the county.
The white whale of the initiative was the creation of the Red Line, which is currently slated to provide a commuter rail between uptown and Davidson, and eventually into Iredell County.
