This isn't a movie for everybody. It's based on a novella by Denis Johnson and the emphasis is on evoking period and place and feeling rather than on plot. Director Clint Bentley wrote screenplay with Greg Zwedar (they previously wrote Sing Sing ) and the narration, read by Will Patton ( Yellowstone ), tells a lot of the story. It's used judiciously - not everything is spelled out - and seems appropriate here: the main character is a man of deep feeling but doesn't always speak. Sometimes there's nobody for him to talk to and memories and nightmares are the only companions.

The main action of the film covers about half a century, from World War I to the era of space exploration, but the main character is not like Forrest Gump, who witnessed and sometimes influenced significant moments
