The Pomona City Council has agreed to serve as an official venue city for the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to Los Angeles in 2028.
Organizers for the Olympics announced earlier this year that Fairplex in Pomona would host cricket , a sport dating back to the 16th century. The sport has has not been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900.
“On behalf of the city, we are thrilled to stage cricket, the second most popular sport in the world, as part of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games,” Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval said, according to a city news release. “… We are proud that Pomona will be the first to hold Olympic cricket competitions again after 128 years.”
According to the Olympics organizers, Fairplex plans to build a new cricket stadium to host the event.
