Provincial police have charged a Smiths Falls man with murder in connection with the death of a Toledo man in the summer of 2023.

Officers on Thursday arrested Ronald Gough, 58, of Smiths Falls, and charged him with first-degree murder, following an intensive investigation into the murder of 66-year-old Giles Dagenais in July, 2023, the Ontario Provincial Police reported later Thursday.

The accused was remanded into custody following a bail hearing, and is scheduled to be back in court in Brockville on Tuesday, Nov. 25, said police.

Officers with the OPP’s Leeds County detachment, responding to a call shortly after 7 a.m. on July 31, 2023, went to a rural property in the Baker Road area, just south of Toledo, where they found Dagenais dead.
