A Dallas City Council committee rejected a measure to partner the Dallas Police Department with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
The partnership would have given Dallas officers authority to detain and transport people suspected of being in the country illegally in exchange for a federal grant.
Police Chief Daniel Comeaux and Council members argued the program would divert up to 250 officers from addressing violent crime and would not make the city safer.
