Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson called for the discussion with the city council’s Public Safety and Government Efficiency Committees after he learned the chief turned down the agreement, which could have provided $25 million in reimbursements.

NBC 5 has learned ICE also approached Mayor Johnson about a 287(g) agreement.

“I looked at all the great things that had happened in Dallas, and it’s not the program for us,” Comeaux said.

Comeaux told members of the city council Thursday that the potential impact on response times and public trust were some of the biggest drivers behind his decision to turn down a proposed partnership with ICE for a 287(g) agreement.

“You take 250 officers away from patrol, it would hurt us really bad. Call times would skyrocket,” Comeaux said.
