TOWN OF ULSTER — Longtime town Supervisor James Quigley, who won an uncontested reelection on Tuesday, has abruptly resigned.

In a letter to the town board, Quigley announced his “formal and unequivocal notification” of his intent to resign as supervisor effective Jan. 1.

“In accordance with Section 31(4) of the Public Officers Law, this resignation is submitted as irrevocable and may not be withdrawn or revoked after it is filed with your office,” he wrote.

“I am at peace with myself,” Quigley said in an interview on Thursday night. “I have no remorse in the decision that I’ve made, and my cortisol level has gone down.”

Quigley said he intentionally put the word “irrevocable” into the resignation.
