FARMINGTON, Conn. — After a week of devastating house fires across Connecticut , the American Red Cross is stepping in to help families recover and prepare for what may come next.

Within just 30 minutes of a disaster, the Connecticut Red Cross is on the way to assist those in need.

“They don’t know me, but they know the Red Cross,” said American Red Cross Regional Disaster Officer Rebecca Johnson.

Friendly faces like Johnson’s have been working around the clock through the start of fire season, responding to what she called a troubling surge in home fires.

“When we see the clocks go back, we see the number of home fires grow almost overnight – and we are responding to some very tragic situations,” American Red Cross Regional CEO Richard Branigan said.
