AUSTIN, Texas — A South Austin mother is speaking out after a viral video showed her 14-year-old son allegedly being threatened while fishing at a neighborhood pond.

Victoria Retana said her son spends much of his free time fishing, doing what he loves most. “He lives and breathes it. It's everything to him. So every day he has to get his little fix of fishing. It's non-negotiable,” she said.

That routine fishing session on Oct. 22 turned into something far more troubling. Retana said her son was at Sullivan Park’s pond near Onion Creek when a man approached him, and her son began to film the encounter.

In the video, the man who is off-screen can be heard questioning whether the boy had a fishing license or not. Retana said her son responded to the man’s question by clarifying his age.
