The Mets have claimed infielder Ji-Hwan Bae off waivers from the Pirates and left-handed reliever José Castillo off waivers from the Orioles, and infielder Nick Madrigal, who spent the 2025 season with the Mets but on the injured list, has elected free agency.
Bae was convicted by a South Korean court of assaulting his then-girlfriend on New Year’s Eve in 2017 and served a 30-game suspension in the minors in 2019 for violating domestic violence policy following the conviction. In limited stints with the Pirates at the major league level, he’s made 514 plate appearances with a .223/.294/.293 line, a 62 wRC+, and -0.7 fWAR.
Castillo made appearances for four major league teams this year, but his sixteen appearances and 15.1 innings of work with the Mets constituted the majority of his work
