JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. —

Plans for a controversial data center in Bessemer, Alabama, may be facing complications due to a conflict with the Alabama Department of Transportation's Northern Beltline project.

The proposed project aims to build over 18 million square feet of data storage buildings near the Rock Mountain Lakes community, with the city openly supporting the $14 billion investment that promises to bring 330 jobs. However, residents have expressed concerns over potential environmental impacts and noise.

In October, the city approved an ordinance change to include data centers in light industrial zoning, and project leaders hope to rezone the potential site accordingly. The council plans to hold a rezoning public hearing this month.
