NORFOLK, Va. — 13News Now reported earlier this year when Newport News Shipbuilding furloughed about 400 employees. A shipyard spokesman confirmed that over a hundred of those furloughs are now layoffs.
An HII representative said leadership did not make the decision lightly and did this to increase accountability, efficiency and to improve overall performance.
Employees first learned about the furlough on May 30. At that point, Newport News Shipbuilding President Kari Wilkinson described the furloughs as a necessary step.
Now, over a hundred shipbuilders that hoped to return back to work have to look elsewhere for employment.
