A coalition of immigrant and civil rights organizations declared a victory Thursday after Center Line city officials cancelled an agreement with federal immigration officials that would have seen local police officers deputized to enforce immigration laws.
The move follows a standing-room only Center Line City Council meeting earlier in the week where opponents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spoke for nearly an hour against the so-called Section 287(g) memo of understanding between the city and ICE.
After listening to their concerns, council members directed city administrators to withdraw from the ICE plan.
