LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Capital Humane Society has distributed more than 20,000 pounds of dry pet food from its pantry this year. With the recent pause in SNAP benefits, the shelter anticipates an even greater demand for pet food and supplies.
While these items are not covered by SNAP benefits, it’s a direct impact from the ongoing government shutdown, according to Nadia Postek, the director of animal welfare.
“We’re actually seeing an increase in pet owners coming to our pantry and through our doors, as well as possible surrenders that may come in due to finances,” she said.
The animal shelter has opened its pet pantry to the entire community, allowing individuals to pick up essential supplies every two weeks. This increased accessibility means that demand is currently outpacing the
