"War Year Champions: The Welcome Diversion of the 1944 Green Bay Packers," recounts how people — and the Packers — coped with World War II. They tried to live their lives, but the war shaped everything. Three years into the conflict — three years for the United States, that is — Brown County struggled to meet war bond goals and paper collections. It was short on both, and other things, too.

The Packers, like other NFL teams, struggled to fill their roster. Of 32 players drafted that year by coach Curly Lambeau, not one would play for the Packers in 1944. Yet that 1944 squad was one of 13 Packers teams to win an NFL championship.
