October 7, 1966 As the gold mines petered out, the orchards started to bloom. There are about 500 acres of apples right now, planted in and around Julian. The growers raise 8 main varieties, most popular of which is Red Delicious, accounting for about 30-percent of the area's total. That crop, incidentally, will total about 40-or-50 thousand bushels this year. The pies you could make from that would run into the millions. So, Julian takes time to honor the apple, which might be regarded by some as "red gold". The bands will play and the horses will march in a parade Sunday at 2 in the afternoon.
