BILLINGS, Mont. – A progressive group in Billings is urging Governor Greg Gianforte to do more to support SNAP recipients during the ongoing government shutdown. People United Billings organized a demonstration outside the DoubleTree Hotel to protest the governor's refusal to fund SNAP without federal reimbursement.
Protesters chanted, "Montanans starve, the governor dines...paid for by our dime!" expressing their dissatisfaction with the current situation.
Despite the governor donating $20,000, which is a quarter of his annual salary, to the hunger-fighting nonprofit Producer Partnership in Livingston, protesters argue that his decision not to use state funds to replace SNAP benefits is inadequate.
