In a major boost to India’s eastern frontier security, the Indian Army on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a new military station at Dhubri, marking the force’s first major installation in western Assam and its closest base to the Bangladesh border.

The upcoming Lachit Borphukan Military Station, named after the legendary Ahom general celebrated for his valiant resistance against Mughal forces, is situated at Bamuni Part 1 and Part 2 villages on government land previously occupied by about 40 encroaching families, who have since been evicted.
