Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a year-long celebration of India’s national song, ‘Vande Mataram’, on Friday at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. This event marks the 150th anniversary of the song, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on November 7, 1875. To commemorate this milestone, the Prime Minister unveiled a special stamp and coin, and introduced a digital portal for citizens to share their renditions of the song.

During the event, PM Modi emphasized the significance of ‘Vande Mataram’ as a symbol of national unity and pride. He stated, "Vande Mataram is a true symbol of India's unity as it has inspired generations. This will give us new inspiration and fill the people of the country with new energy." He highlighted the song's role in India's freedom struggle and its continued relevance in fostering patriotism among citizens.

The celebrations included a mass singing of the full version of ‘Vande Mataram’ across various public spaces in the country, with participation from people of all ages. The Prime Minister joined in the singing at the main venue, reinforcing the song's emotional connection to the nation.

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta were also present at the event. Shekhawat remarked on the importance of the song in uniting Indians and its historical significance in the independence movement. He noted, "If there is one spirit that can unite all Indians in achieving the dream of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), it is Vande Mataram."

The year-long commemoration will run from November 7, 2025, to November 7, 2026, celebrating the enduring legacy of ‘Vande Mataram’. The song, which first appeared in the literary journal Bangadarshan, has become a powerful emblem of India’s awakening and self-respect, inspiring countless individuals throughout the nation’s history.
