Noting the “alarming rise in dog-bite incidents,” the Supreme Court on Friday ordered that all schools, hospitals, public sports complexes, bus stands, railway stations, and similar places must be properly fenced to prevent stray dogs from entering.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria, hearing the suo motu Stray Dogs case, directed that local authorities must carry out periodic inspections to ensure no stray dog habitats exist in these areas.

The Court said it is the responsibility of local bodies to catch stray dogs from such places and take them to designated shelters, where the dogs must be vaccinated and sterilised according to the Animal Birth Control Rules.
