In a seemingly veiled attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (November 7) remarked that key stanzas of the national song Vande Mataram were omitted in 1937, which, he said, sowed the seeds of partition. He asserted that such a “divisive mindset” continues to pose a challenge for the nation.
Song’s split linked to partition
Modi made these comments while inaugurating the year-long commemoration of Vande Mataram to mark 150 years of the national song. On the occasion, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi, he also unveiled a commemorative stamp and coin.
