Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe recently announced a new strategy to make the national capital region Canada’s Defence Innovation Hub. I understand some people may balk at being involved in defence, but not me. I say follow the example set by Huntsville, Alabama, and turn that into a powerful engine to make Ottawa the best, most people-centred city it can be.

I went deep inside the document that provides a roadmap for how Invest Ottawa will work together to “unlock $3 billion in public and private investment for the region over the next five years.” Each dollar is expected to generate twice or three times the investment in “total economic output,” which is what we used to call spin-off benefits in the good old days.
