Montreal filmmaker Léa Pool’s latest feature On sera heureux couldn’t be more timely. Written by noted Quebec playwright Michel Marc Bouchard, it’s a drama about a young refugee from Morocco in Montreal who is willing to do whatever it takes to save his lover, an Iranian man who is threatened with deportation to his home country, where he may well be executed because he’s gay.

The plight of refugees is a constant in the news these days. But in a recent phone interview, Pool said it was the personal story that attracted her to the project, not the politics.
