Avery Anderson once tried to make an impression on the older football players with how well he could block from out of the backfield.
Now a senior, the McDonogh 35 running back has little trouble drawing attention as the leading rusher on a team that clinched at least a share of the District 10-4A title last week by defeating Douglass.
That victory came one week after his biggest game yet as a high school player, when he ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries in a comeback win against Carver.
“That’s another game we started off slow,” Anderson said about how his team overcame a two-touchdown deficit and won 42-26. “I knew we had to come back and compete with them.”
