HENDERSON, Texas (KLTV) - The city of Henderson expects around 35,000 to 40,000 people to attend a festival on Saturday, a number that would nearly triple the city’s population.
The Heritage Syrup Festival showcases the making of ribbon cane syrup at the Rusk County Depot Museum grounds.
26 volunteers work to cook around 2,500 stocks of ribbon cane at the festival.
Volunteers say it doesn’t taste like average syrup. They say it’s more of an acquired taste.
“Most people will taste it and go ew! That’s not what you think about table syrup,” Lisa Cook, a volunteer on syrup cooking team for over 25 years, said.
“It’s got a little wang to it. It’s got a little different taste to it, but there’s nothing added. It’s just strictly ribbon cane syrup,” Harry Hamilton, a volunteer on syrup cooki
