As food insecurity rises before the holiday season and as federal government aid dwindles, Riverside will spend $100,000 to create an emergency food program.
The Riverside City Council on Tuesday, Nov. 4, unanimously approved the program, in partnership with the Salvation Army. It will assist Riverside residents, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries and federal employees.
“This just simply demonstrates what we can do at the local level,” Councilmember Jim Perry said at the meeting. “By working together … and doing so in a timely manner to help those in need.”
The funding is expected to carry over into next fiscal year and the food support money will be used until it runs out.
