Chill, Premier Smith. Don’t take for granted that the two recall petitions currently circulating and the other seven in the application process will fail. But don’t panic, either. The bar over which petitioners must jump is dauntingly high.

During question period in the legislature on Wednesday, Smith said her government would not make any changes to the recall legislation “at the moment.” But she added that, in her opinion, the current active and proposed petition drives aren’t using the legislation in good faith. Instead, they are attempting to overthrow her government.

Indeed, last week Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) president Gil McGowan did call for members to organize and support recall efforts against UCP MLAs in order to “topple this government.” Unions are angry at the UCP’s
