ALAMOGORDO, N.M. —

The Lincoln National Forest is preparing to begin prescribed fire operations on the Sacramento Ranger District starting Friday and continuing through Nov. 14, weather permitting.

Officials say the burns are part of a long-term effort to reduce hazardous vegetation and protect nearby communities, infrastructure and natural resources from the threat of extreme wildfires.

The operation will include 35 acres of hand piles within Aspen and Slide Campgrounds south of Cloudcroft, and 858 acres within the Sixteen Springs area along Carr Gap Forest Road.

Temporary closures are possible near these areas to ensure public safety.

Drivers are urged to watch for warning signs and fire personnel along roads before and during operations.
