After significant pressure from parents worried about their children’s safety in the event of a catastrophic earthquake, staff at Portland Public Schools are floating a new draft of the formula they plan to use to decide which schools will get a share of $100 million in funds earmarked for seismic upgrades.
The previous draft formula gave just 35% weight to an individual building’s seismic risk, and another 20% to its overall facility condition, meaning how much deferred maintenance work is built up there beyond seismic needs.
