NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The NYPD and other New York City officials were made aware of the ICE raid on Canal Street in the morning before the operation was launched, a spokesperson for the department confirmed to PIX11 on Friday.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch met with city lawmakers ahead of the raid to discuss that the NYPD would not engage in immigration enforcement but would stand by in the event officers were needed to protect New York City residents, the spokesperson said.

The lawmakers who were made aware were Speaker Adrienne Adams, Council Member Yusef Salaam (Chair of the Public Safety Committee), and Council Member Alexa Aviles (Chair of the Immigration Committee), according to the NYPD.
