WASHINGTON ‒ President Donald Trump is set to attend this Sunday's NFL game between the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders ‒ the latest in a long list of sporting events Trump has watched in person since returning to the White House.
Trump is going to the game at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, home of the Commanders, to take in a Veteran's Day celebration at halftime, a White House official confirmed to USA TODAY.
ESPN's Pat McAfee, who first reported on Trump's attendance, said the president plans to watch the game from the suite of Commanders owner Josh Harris. Trump in May welcomed Harris to the Oval Office to announce plans for the 2027 NFL Draft to take place at the National Mall in Washington.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his disapproval of the name "Commanders" and urged Washington to go back to its former name, the Redskins, which the team ditched in 2020 amid nationwide protests on racial injustice.
In July, Trump threatened to try to block Washington's plans for a new stadium in the District of Columbia if the franchise did not make the switch to Redskins, but he has seemed to move on. The D.C. Council approved a $3.8 billion stadium deal in September to return to the former RFK Stadium site, which served as the home for the franchise from 1961 to 1996.
The Lions-Commanders game will be the first NFL game of the 2025 season Trump ‒ a lifelong sports fan ‒ has attended. Weeks into his second White House term, Trump became the first sitting president to watch a Super Bowl in person. He followed it up the next weekend by attending the the Daytona 500.
He's not slowed down, attending the NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia, a LIV Golf tournament at his own Doral Golf Club in Miami, a FIFA Club World Cup soccer match in New Jersey, multiple UFC fights, the U.S. Open Men's Final tennis match in New York City, a New York Yankees game on the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and, most recently, the Ryder Cup in Long Island, New York.
