With the government shutdown threatening to disrupt federal food assistance programs, food banks across the country are scrambling to help people in need.

The Great Plains Food Bank , which has distribution centers in Fargo and Bismarck, has already asked for "urgent help" as it to tries to raise the funds needed to source and distribute an additional 1 million pounds of food to meet the "surge in demand expected in the weeks ahead," the organization's website says.

The story is similar at food banks across the country, with more people expected to come through the doors as the shutdown drags on, USA TODAY reported.
