AMARILLO — Palo Duro head football coach Eric Mims Sr. walked onto the field at Dick Bivins Stadium ahead of the team's regular season finale with boxing gloves on.
Not long after, his team delivered the first blow in its District 2-5A Division II game against Abilene Cooper.
A touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Reese II to Daniel Moses on the Dons' first play from scrimmage was the opening act in PD's 52-28 win against the Cougars, one that helped the team make history.
With the victory, Palo Duro (9-1, 6-0) secured its first outright district title in more than 20 years, a goal that Mims has had since taking over at his alma mater. After an impressive regular season that saw the Dons win their final nine contests, PD turns its focus towards making a run in the postseason.
