Romulus — Travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport were anxiously awaiting their flights Friday as a federally ordered restriction on air travel took effect there and at 39 other airports across the country.

The FAA on Wednesday announced a 10% reduction in flights at major airports to ease strain on the air traffic control system amid a record-long federal government shutdown. Airports in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, along with hubs across the United States, are also among those affected by the flight cuts.

According to the Wayne County Airport Authority, Detroit Metro handles more than 800 flights daily , meaning a 10% reduction could scrap more than 80 into and out of the airport. As of midafternoon Friday, 55 flights at Detroit Metro had been canceled, according to the airp
