Police have launched a major investigation into the death of a child who was struck by a train in New South Wales’ west.
Emergency services were called to Baranbah Street, Baan Baa, near Narrabri, about 7.50pm on Friday, following reports of a baby girl who had been hit by a freight train.
The one-year-old girl was treated by paramedics for serious injuries before being taken to hospital where she later died.
“Officers attached to Oxley Police District were told the child was walking along the road before being clipped by the train,” NSW Police said in a statement.
A crime scene has been established with investigations commencing into the circumstances of the crash.
The train driver – a 22-year-old man – was uninjured and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
