Emma is a loving and playful Tabby cat with a heart murmur in need of a fospice, or a foster-hospice, family.

Emma may only be a year and a half old, but this tabby has already endured more than most cats do in a lifetime.

The Bergen County Animal Shelter is searching for a foster-hospice — or “fospice” — home for Emma, a spirited 1½-year-old cat with a severe heart murmur.

Shelter staff say Emma was diagnosed with the condition as a kitten and has been closely monitored ever since. While her heart condition carries the risk of sudden decline, Emma’s energy and charm have never waned.

After spending most of her young life at the shelter, Emma once found a loving fospice family who helped her blossom. When the family’s home situation changed, Emma was returned — but not before showing how much love and joy she can bring.

“She came back much more affectionate, less ‘bratty,’ but still with the same playful energy everyone at the shelter had come to love,” staff said. “It was like Emma 2.0!”

The shelter’s biggest goal now is to find her a place where she can spend whatever time she has left warm, comfortable, and loved.

Emma isn’t a fan of dogs or other cats but has bonded with an older child. She can play a little rough, so a home with older children is best, shelter staff said.
