Hundreds of frontline workers at Toronto’s community and senior housing corporations have voted overwhelmingly to strike, citing understaffing issues and violence in the workplace.
The union representing the workers, CUPE Local 79, announced Friday that it has also filed for a “no-board” report from the Ontario Minister of Labour. The report would trigger a 17-day countdown to a strike or local deadline.
“When violence and understaffing become the norm, everyone pays the price — workers, tenants, and seniors alike,” said union president Nas Yadollahi in the release.
Over the last week, 98 per cent of Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) workers and 94 per cent of Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation (TSHC) workers voted in favour of a strike.
