AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Many people in the community know Howard Smith as a former Amarillo city councilmember or long-time realtor, but Smith is also a hometown hero.
Smith served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Guadalcanal in the 1960s.
Smith said he was going to be drafted, so he joined the Navy and he applied for officer cadet school and was accepted.
"I graduated from Baylor in 1964…and then got a master's degree from Baylor, MBA in '66, and the draft was after me, so I joined the Navy and was accepted into officer cadet school. I didn't start until the Monday after Thanksgiving in '66. I finished that April 14th and became an officer, and then was assigned to supply school after officer cadet school.
