Five active-duty Philadelphia police officers have been fired following criminal charges related to their involvement in a city-funded youth boxing program, officials announced on Friday, Nov. 7.
The charges stem from an Internal Affairs and District Attorney’s Office investigation into the “Guns Down, Gloves Up” initiative — a boxing program designed to deter youth violence but allegedly exploited for double compensation. According to police, the officers received payment from the program while also being paid by the City as active-duty officers, sometimes during scheduled working hours.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel suspended the five active-duty officers for 30 days with intent to dismiss after the charges were filed. Four additional individuals — including former Captain Nashid Akil and former officers George Gee, Robyn Gee, and LaCarmela Fortune — retired before charges were brought.
“I took direct action to dismiss five Philadelphia Police Officers following the filing of criminal charges related to their participation in the ‘Guns Down, Gloves Up’ boxing program,” Bethel said. “I am deeply troubled by this entire situation. PPD commanders are expected to set the standard for integrity and accountability... When that trust is compromised, we must act decisively.”
